HOW TO PROTEST YOUR PROPERTY TAXES IN TEXAS

How to Protest Your Property Taxes in Texas

Texas ranks among the states with the highest property taxes, largely because it does not levy an income tax. Homeowners in Texas can typically lower their property taxes in two ways: by applying for tax exemptions or by contesting the assessed value of their property.

YOUR RIGHTS

One of your most important rights as a taxpayer is your right to protest to the appraisal review board (ARB). You may protest if you disagree with the appraisal district’s value or any of the appraisal district’s actions concerning your property.

QUICK GUIDE

  • Go to your County’s Appraisal district website. (links below)
  • File a notice of protest.
  • Prepare information for hearing.
  • Attend an informal hearing at the Appraisal District office.
  • Attend an Appraisal Review Board hearing.
  • Appeal through district court or arbitration.
